Is Dream Recall: Aids & Obstacles
Over time, I time I have been to nearly a hundred sites studying and reading about dream recall. There really is not very much information on it, mostly because it is a simple process. You could say there are very many sites and little information. Visiting a large number of sites becomes repetitive very quickly. Some sights evne offer software the supposedly flashes you with messages to condition, or to instruct, your mind into remembering your dreams better, dreaming at will, and learing to construct your own dreams.
I have my doubts aon someo f thes programs and quite a few of these sites are clearly security risks.
There are however a few common sense steps and commonly used ideas to help. If you have difficulty remembering your dreams, you can actually work on it and improve it. I have compiled the information I have found below.
Remembering the Dream
- Recall the dream: As soon as you wake up, review and replay the entire dream in your mind. This will help you remember more of the dream and to remember more details after you fully awake. Even if it is the middle of the night at least review it till you fall back to sleep. Reviewing the dream is one of the most important steps next to writing it down.
- Write it down: Right after you wake up, in the least, write a quick description of your dream or speak it into a tape recorder or mp3 player. If you're short on time, just write down some key elements that will help you remember it later. Include all significant details and emotions. You may consider kkeeping a paper journal of your dreams by your bed. You can transfer it to a PC later.
-
There is no need to try to organize the dream or edit at this point. Just write whatever comes to your mind even if it does not seem logical. You can edit later and that is best done on a PC, but a PC is NOT required/
- Wake up! Sometimes you just have to wake up in the middle of the night.
- Want and expect to remember: Silly as it sounds this is a very important step. Tell you self you will remember. Work at it consistently and it will begin to happen. Approach it as a skill that you are learning.
- Put it all together: When you have time, the sooner the better, type out the dream with details. Often more details will come back to memory as you do this step. Using a PC is the best way as you can insert and move things later.
- Consider what triggered it. Think of events that may have triggered your dreads. Was it work or a family situation? Do not forget that some dreams do not actually count - For example, if you just watched an action move and then had an action dream, most likely it is just a result of the movie. It is best not to bother trying to put any meaning into it.
- The more you try to remember each dream, the better you get at remembering all dreams. Remembering dreams is a skill like like nay other skill you may attempt to learn.br>
A Few Other Common Techniques:
- Setting your alarm at 90 min intervals from the time you sleep to record dreams - I find that quite tiring, but there are those who do it.
- Drinking fluids to induce urination in the middle of the night to record dreams
- Wake up after each dream. (No thanks!)
- Some people talk to others about their dreams. They may even form friendships or groups exclusively for this purpose. Such people report that it helps gain ability to remember dreams better
Obstacles to Dream Recall
Often people have difficulty remembering or fail to analyze their dreams because of assumptions and attitudes that dismiss dreams as unworthy of recording or analyzing. Some of the assumptions include or are because of:
- Fragmentation - Only parts of the dream can be remembered so it is not worth of being recorded or analyzed. This can be quite the opposite. Sometimes the symbols contained in the fragments are either very important, or serve to confirm interpretations of previous dreams.
- Too trivial or just a repeat of daily events.
- The dream is Illogical, confusing,or appears to be silly or nonsense. Don't judge it until you interpret the symbols.
- The dream seems evil or is immoral. Don not let it frighten you or bother you. It does not mean you are immoral or bad. Instead see what the symbols of the objects and actions may mean.
- The dream was frightening.
- Inadequate in some way; for example, lacking universal symbols or an appealing coherent story line.
Do not dismiss your dreams as worthless for any of the reasons above. The more you work on remembering details of any dream the better you get at remembering all dreams. You never know what dreams will give you insight The tiniest, most confusing, disgusting or silly dream fragment can have profound meaning or provide confirmation or provide part of the bigger picture.
